Natko Nodilo

The essays gather political, historical and cultural essays by Natko Nodil in which he discusses national identity, liberalism, religion and society, with an accompanying essay by Janko Koharić on the author's life and work.

Natko Nodilo, one of the most prominent Croatian historians and political thinkers of the second half of the 19th century, is posthumously represented in the book Essays. The work was printed as the sixth volume of the Educational Library in a commissioned edition of the Croatian Printing Institute. The book also contains an essay by Janko Koharić on Natko Nodilo.

The book brings together a series of Nodilo's essays in which the author considers issues of national politics, cultural identity, liberalism, religion, history, and social development. Among the texts are treatises such as The National Name and Imperial Smoke, Clericalism and Liberalism, More on the Heresy of Liberalism, State Faith, Freedom of Will in Writers, and Artism. The essays reflect Nodilo's intellectual breadth and his effort to observe social and political phenomena from a historical and philosophical perspective.

The special value of the edition is given by Koharić's text on Nodilo, originally published in 1901. In it, Nodilo is portrayed as a fighter for freedom of thought, historical truth and liberal ideals. Koharić analyzes his political and scientific work and presents him as an intellectual who sought to connect national consciousness with European cultural and political values.

The Essays are an important document of Croatian political and cultural thought from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. The book provides insight into the topics that preoccupied Croatian intellectuals of that time – the relationship between the people and the state, the question of freedom, the role of religion in public life and Croatia's place in the European cultural space. Today, it is considered a valuable source for studying Nodilo's intellectual heritage and Croatian social thought of the modern period.
