Pavao M. Rakoš

"Before Dusk" is a collection of short stories about the everyday life, interpersonal relationships, and moral dilemmas of the Slavonian people. Rakoš realistically portrays their fates, feelings, and social circumstances.

Before Dusk by Pavle M. Rakoš is a collection of short stories published in Osijek in 1935. It contains the stories "Before Dusk", "Bata", "Žao mi goveda", "Ona odlazi", "Na sprovodu", "Dafina", "U gradu" and "Gospodin čovjek". Through various characters and life situations, the author depicts the everyday life of a Slavonian man, his social circumstances, interpersonal relationships and inner dilemmas.

Common features of the stories are the emphasized psychological observations of the characters, a sense of transience and an interest in moral issues and human destiny. Rakoš describes ordinary people faced with loss, poverty, social changes, love disappointments and personal re-examinations. In some stories, social themes prevail, while others focus on intimate feelings and the inner life of the individual.

The author writes in a simple and realistic style, trying to faithfully depict the life of the Slavonian environment between the two world wars. Instead of major historical events, the focus is on everyday human stories and characters. This is why the collection has documentary and literary value, as it provides insight into the social and cultural circumstances of the time. "Before Dusk" is an example of Croatian regional prose that speaks of universal human experiences through small life stories.
