"Novi narodni učitel" is a Croatian edition of the book Contagious Diseases: Prevention and Cure (1924) by American physician R. Manning Clark, a popular manual on the prevention, recognition, and treatment of infectious diseases.
The book The New National Teacher: How We Can Protect Ourselves from Disease and Cure It, Described Freely and Understandably is a Croatian edition of the work Contagious Diseases: Prevention and Cure by the American physician R. Manning Clark, published in 1924. The work was intended for a wide audience as a practical guide for understanding, preventing and treating the most common infectious diseases.
The author explains the symptoms, course of the disease and basic treatment procedures in a simple and accessible way so that readers can recognize the danger of infection in time and react correctly. Special attention is paid to prevention, i.e. measures that can prevent the spread of disease within the family and community. The book covers diseases that represented a significant public health problem at the beginning of the 20th century, including the common cold, measles, scarlet fever, polio, mumps, chickenpox, influenza, whooping cough, smallpox and typhus.
One of the more important chapters is dedicated to home methods of treatment and patient care. Clark describes simple therapeutic procedures, including hydrotherapy and other then accepted methods of health care that could be carried out in the home. The aim of the book is not to replace the doctor, but to provide basic health education and to help readers understand the causes of disease and the importance of hygiene and healthy lifestyle habits.
The work is a valuable example of health-educational literature of the interwar period. Its popularity stemmed from the effort to bring medical knowledge closer to a wide segment of the population in understandable language, without professional terminology. The book is significant today as a historical document that testifies to the development of public health, health education and the popularization of medical knowledge in the first half of the 20th century.
