Junačke narodne pjesme: Hrvatske i srpske

A collection of heroic folk songs of Croatian and Serbian tradition, compiled by linguist and ethnologist Milan Strašek. Contains classical epic motifs with an extensive introduction on folk poetry. Intended for school use.

The book Heroic Folk Songs – Croatian and Serbian appeared in two editions, in 1925 and in an expanded edition in 1929. It was edited by Dr. Milan Strašek (1887–1937), a Croatian linguist, ethnologist and professor from Dugo Selo/Oborovo, known for his work on dialectology, protection of the Croatian language and polemics against plagiarism in science.

The collection brings together epic (heroic) folk songs of the common South Slavic oral tradition, with an emphasis on Croatian and Serbian variants. It contains well-known cycles and motifs: Kosovo songs, stories about Kraljević Marko, the Mrnjavčevićs (e.g. The Marriage of King Vukašin), hajducs, Senković Ivo, Janković Stojan, Mustafa-beg and others. There are also ballads such as Nezhavalni sinovi and songs about the marriages of heroes, conflicts with the Turks and knightly mejdans. The poems are recorded in the original language with characteristic ten-meter, formulas and epic stylistics.

Strašek added an extensive introduction (pp. III–XXII) to the book on folk poetry – its origin, development, poetics, role in culture and historical context. The introduction emphasizes the value of oral literature as a source of identity and ethical role models (heroism, honor, loyalty). The collection is intended for school and educational audiences, as part of literary editions for high schools, in order to preserve and popularize the tradition during the Kingdom of SHS/Yugoslavia.

Today, it is a rare antiquarian book, which represents an important example of the Croatian approach to the common epic heritage – without unitaristic erasure of differences, but with respect for Croatian and Serbian variants. Strašek's work reflects his broader interest in language, folklore and the preservation of cultural heritage.

The book is still useful today for the study of oral literature, epic poetics, and South Slavic mythology. It shows how heroic poems shaped the collective memory of the people through centuries of resistance and heroism.
