Dornenvögel

Dornenvögel

Colleen McCullough

Meggie Cleary grows up on a farm in Drogheda, Australia, torn between family, love and fate. Central to her forbidden love is the charismatic priest Ralph de Bricassart.

Dornenvögel (The Thorn Birds) by Colleen McCullough is a family saga and romance set in the harsh, vast landscape of Australia. The story centers on Meggie Cleary, the only daughter in a large, impoverished family who comes to the large Drogheda Estate, where she grows from a girl to a woman marked by deep longings, losses, and unfulfilled dreams.

The novel follows several generations of the Cleary family, but its emotional climax is the relationship between Meggie and the Catholic priest Ralph de Bricassart. Ralph is ambitious, attractive, and torn between a spiritual calling, personal desires, and a desire for ecclesiastical advancement. Their love is strong but doomed - not only because of church vows but also because of social expectations, pride, and the choices they both make.

In addition to the love story, the novel depicts the difficult life on the Australian land: droughts, fires, loneliness, family tensions, and the cost of survival. McCullough blends intimate drama with epic storytelling, exploring themes of forbidden love, sacrifice, faith, power, and destiny. Dornenvögel is a story about people who desperately want love and fulfillment, but whose own choices and circumstances lead them toward pain, loss, and enduring longing.
