Djela XV: Kritike: Prikazi i polemike iz hrvatske i srpske književnosti i plastičnih umjetnosti (1896.–1904.)

Antun Gustav Matoš

The fifteenth volume of the first edition of Matoš's collected works brings together literary and art criticism and polemics from the period 1896–1904, revealing Matoš as a perceptive aesthetician and critic.

The fifteenth volume Critics: Reviews and polemics from Croatian and Serbian literature and plastic arts (1896–1904) is part of the first edition of the collected works of Antun Gustav Matoš, published in 17 volumes by Binoza between 1935 and 1940. This edition represents the first systematic attempt to gather and critically organize Matoš's literary legacy and occupies a special place in the history of Croatian literature.

The volume gathers Matoš's literary and art criticism, reviews and polemical texts written between 1896 and 1904. In them, the author analyzes the works of Croatian and Serbian writers, painters and sculptors, assessing their artistic value according to high aesthetic criteria and contemporary European literary and artistic trends. His reviews are distinguished by their erudition, argumentation, and distinctive style, which intertwines analytical, witty, and polemical sharpness.

The collection is particularly valuable for the texts that testify to Matoš's efforts to include Croatian literature and fine arts in a broader European cultural context, while at the same time encouraging the development of high artistic standards. The volume was edited by Julije Benešić, while Milan Matoš collected and prepared the writer's legacy. Thanks to their work, a valuable corpus of critical texts has been preserved, confirming Matoš as one of the most influential literary and artistic critics of Croatian modernity and representing an indispensable source for studying the cultural history of the transition from the 19th to the 20th century.
