Djela XVII: Kritike: Prikazi i polemike iz hrvatske i srpske književnosti i plastičnih umjetnosti (1910.–1913.)

Antun Gustav Matoš

The seventeenth, final volume of the first edition of Matoš's collected works brings literary and art criticism and polemics from the period 1910-1913, rounding off his critical oeuvre.

The seventeenth volume of Critics: Reviews and Controversies from Croatian and Serbian Literature and the Visual Arts (1910–1913) is the final part of the first edition of the collected works of Antun Gustav Matoš, published in 17 volumes by Binoza between 1935 and 1940. This completed the first systematic project of gathering and critically organizing Matoš's literary legacy, which represents one of the most important editions of Croatian literary heritage.

The volume gathers Matoš's last literary and art criticisms, reviews and polemical texts written between 1910 and 1913. In them, the author analyzes the works of Croatian and Serbian writers and artists, evaluating them according to high aesthetic criteria and in the context of contemporary European artistic movements. His criticisms are distinguished by exceptional erudition, precise style and well-argued judgments, and are often imbued with irony, wit and polemical sharpness. Matoš consistently advocates artistic originality, aesthetic excellence and the responsibility of writers and artists towards national culture.

The volume was edited by Julije Benešić, while Milan Matoš collected and prepared the writer's legacy. As the final part of the first edition of Matoš's collected works, this book rounds out his critical opus and represents an indispensable source for studying Croatian modernity, literary criticism and cultural life on the eve of the First World War.
