Bis ans Ende aller Tage

Lonnie Coleman

Lonnie Coleman's epic historical novel about a large plantation in Georgia. Through the fate of the Kendrick family, slaves, and the intertwining of passions and secrets, the glory and fall of the antebellum American South is depicted.

“Until the End of Days” (originally titled Beulah Land) is the first novel in Lonnie Coleman’s monumental plantation trilogy, set in antebellum Georgia and the period immediately preceding the American Civil War (1800–1861). The plot focuses on the magnificent Beulah Land plantation estate and the Kendrick family who run it, providing a multi-layered and poignant picture of life in the American South.

The story follows in detail the dynamics of the extremely complex relationships within the landowner family, as well as the lives of the slaves whose labor sustains that wealth. The central character is Sarah Kendrick, a determined and capable woman who strives to preserve the estate in the midst of family tragedies, marital discord, and social pressures. Through a series of vivid characters – from white aristocrats to disenfranchised slaves striving for freedom – the author reveals the contrast between the external splendor of the plantation elite and the dark moral compromises and human suffering on which this system was built.

Lonnie Coleman brings a uniquely evocative atmosphere of vast cotton plantations, imbued with forbidden loves, family rivalries, and the foreboding of an imminent war that will destroy the world forever. The novel celebrates resilience and survival in the midst of epochal historical change.
