Sobaričina kći

Barbara Mutch

In 1919, Cathleen leaves Ireland to marry in South Africa. Lonely, she becomes close to her daughter's maid, Ada, and teaches her to play the piano. When Ada becomes pregnant with a mixed-race child, she flees under pressure from society.

The Maid's Daughter, the debut novel by Barbara Mutch, is an emotional historical drama set in the harsh and magical landscape of South Africa's Karoo region. The story begins in 1919 with the arrival of Irishwoman Cathleen Harrington, who is seeking a new beginning in a new country with her fiancé. Faced with loneliness and a cold relationship, Cathleen finds solace in music and a special bond with Ada, the daughter of her black maid.

Recognizing Ada's extraordinary gift for music, Cathleen teaches her to play the piano, which opens the door to a whole new world for her. However, growing up in a society deeply divided by racial prejudice has serious consequences. Ada becomes pregnant with a mixed-race child, which causes her to be humiliated and forced to flee. Despite all the pressures and growing repression of the apartheid system, Cathleen does not give up on Ada, but risks her own safety to find her.

This is a moving story of friendship, loyalty and motherhood across decades of South African history. Through the lens of two strong women, the novel speaks of the struggle for dignity, the power of art and the hope that endures despite injustice and social divisions.
