This book is presented as both a handbook and an essay. A handbook because it aims to present theology students with the issues of the discipline they are to study, but also with a global vision of the entire history of the Catholic Church through twenty centuries. An essay because the author does not intend to be exhaustive, and in his hypotheses and approximations, which he must engage in, he advocates only himself. The book does not present an ecumenical perspective. The two chapters on Protestantism and the Orthodox Churches were written by a Catholic historian, although some colleagues of other confessions also read them.
