Released in May 2006, “Taking the Long Way” is the seventh studio album by Texas band Dixie Chicks (now The Chicks). The release was a bold response to the controversy and radio blackout the group faced following Natalie Maines’ political comments in 2003. Instead of retreating, the trio, with the help of legendary producer Rick Rubin, created their most personal and mature original material.
Musically, the album marks a noticeable departure from the traditional bluegrass sound towards a tighter pop-rock and more expressive alt-country expression.
