Časni trgovci

Časni trgovci

Philippa Gregory

The main character, Josiah Cole, is an ambitious merchant who wants to become one of the big players in the city. To do this, he needs capital and a respectable wife. Frances Scott, who has applied for a job as a governess, becomes his wife because her social connections and reputation promise to benefit Josiah's rise. The marriage is mutually beneficial, but Frances soon discovers the dark truth about her husband's slave trade, which deeply shocks her.

Mehuru, an African slave from the Yoruba kingdom, enters her life, a man of deep spirituality and dignity. Despite the enormous social and cultural differences, an irresistible attraction develops between Frances and Mehuru, imbued with a desperate need for love and freedom. Frances is torn between social obligations and feelings for Mehuru, which leads to a tragic fate.

The novel explores moral dilemmas, the cruelty of slavery, and the complexity of human relationships in the context of a brutal system. Gregory emphasizes historical authenticity, drawing on real details about slavery, such as the cruel practices and the lives of enslaved people from various African nations.
