The main character, Josiah Cole, is an ambitious merchant who wants to become one of the big players in the city. To do this, he needs capital and a respectable wife. Frances Scott, who has applied for a job as a governess, becomes his wife because her social connections and reputation promise to benefit Josiah's rise.
