Up&Underground 47/48: Partizanska umjetnost
A thematic issue exploring Partisan literature, film, music, visual art and comics through their connections with antifascism, emancipation and contemporary memory politics.
This thematic issue of Up&Underground examines Partisan art, bringing together studies of cultural production during the antifascist struggle, its postwar transformations and contemporary interpretations. Art is considered as a form of resistance, political action and community building, alongside questions about amateur and professional practice.
Contributions cover literature, cinema, music, visual art, performance and comics. Topics include antifascist ecology, disability and war trauma in Partisan films, Koča Popović, memoir writing, poetry and the paintings of Ivan Generalić. Women’s experiences receive particular attention, including the educational role of the women’s Partisan press. Other essays trace the history of Bella ciao and explore subversive possibilities within Partisan and patriotic music.
Studies of Yugoslav and Croatian Partisan comics address genre, international reception and interpretation. Further contributions examine the films Delije and Partizani, the legacy of Yugonostalgia and Miroslav Krleža’s activities in 1944–1945.
The issue offers a multidisciplinary approach to the relationship between art, ideology and social change, making it relevant to readers studying antifascist cultural heritage and its contested place in public memory.
