Mala supruga

Mala supruga

Milica Jakovljević Mir-Jam

At the center of the novel is a naive country girl with a pure heart and uncorrupted soul (most often Ana in adaptations). This classic romance novel from the 1930s was extremely popular among readers, and still touches the heart today with its simplicity

Raised in an idyllic village, our heroine dreams of great love and family, but fate sends her into an arranged marriage with a prominent Belgrade doctor, Stanoje. The marriage is concluded for practical reasons – dowry, social status and money.

Stanoje, cold and ambitious, does not break off a long-standing secret affair with a sophisticated mistress from the city elite. The young wife arrives in an elegant Belgrade apartment, but this is where her suffering begins. She faces boring everyday life, household chores, fake smiles and the painful discovery of her husband’s infidelity.

Her village simplicity becomes a burden in the elegant world where she is ridiculed for her naivety. She tries to adapt – she learns to dance, dress nicely, cook city specialties – but each step brings new wounds. The plot culminates when she discovers her mistress and faces deep humiliation.

The novel touchingly explores themes of love, betrayal, class differences and the position of women in traditional society. Mir-Jam writes excitingly, with unexpected twists and strong emotions. The main character goes through a difficult crisis, but finds strength in memories and friendships. The ending brings a glimmer of hope – perhaps a divorce or a new beginning – emphasizing that true love cannot live in lies.
