Ponos i predrasude

Jane Austen

Jane Austen's most popular novel, published in 1813, occupies a central place among her works. The entire novel is based on numerous misunderstandings between the impoverished main character, Elizabeth Bennet, and the wealthy groom, Darcy.

Elizabeth, the second of the Bennet family's five daughters, faces social pressure to marry a wealthy man in order to secure the family's future. The arrival of the wealthy Mr. Darcy, seemingly arrogant and haughty, arouses her dislike, while the attractive but unreliable Mr. Wickham wins her affection. The plot follows Elizabeth's gradual discovery of the truth: Darcy's apparent haughtiness conceals nobility and generosity, while Wickham is a fraud who has tried to harm Darcy's family. Through a series of misunderstandings, Elizabeth and Darcy overcome their titular flaws—pride and prejudice—and fall in love.

The novel explores the dynamics of marriage, social expectations, and character development. Elizabeth's wit and Darcy's transformation make their love story compelling. Supporting characters, such as her hapless sister Lydia and the Bennet parents, illustrate the consequences of recklessness and social pressures. Austen masterfully combines irony, social satire and romantic tension, creating a work that celebrates individuality and moral growth. Pride and Prejudice remains a classic because of its universal themes and colorful characters.
