Knjigu imaginarnih bića (1957.) Borges je napisao s Margaritom Guerrero, pod naslovom Manual de zoología fantástica. Sadrži opise mitskih zvijeri iz folklora i književnosti. Godine 1967. prošireno izdanje je prenazvano kao El libro de los seres imaginaros

Knjiga o izmišljenim bićima opremeljena je ilustracijama Vjere Lalin. Ideja da se na jednome mjestu okupe sva literarna čudovišta, plodovi tijekom stoljeća nabujale usmene predaje i rafinirani animalni hibridi niza pjesnika, putopisaca i teologa, već jesama po sebi subverzivna naspram zbilje, a kad se to učini s podrugljivim objektivizmom, s pedanterijom i akribijom što odlikuje ovaj nimalo slučajno tako nazvani priručnik, mora nam biti jasno da smo suočeni s ironičnim uspostavljanjem jednoga svijeta paralelnoga našemu, ali svojeglavoga i samodostatnoga.
