Roman „Seljaci“ (1844) je realističan prikaz francuskog seoskog života u prvoj polovini 19. veka. Knjiga ostavlja utisak tragične borbe između starog poretka i novih društvenih snaga, što je čini ključnim delom francuskog realizma.

Smešten u Burgundiji, roman istražuje sukobe između seljaštva, aristokratije i buržoazije nakon Francuske revolucije, fokusirajući se na društvene i ekonomske tenzije. Glavna radnja prati generala Monkornea, vlasnika imanja Eg, koji pokušava da modernizuje poljoprivredu, ali nailazi na otpor seljaka koje predvodi lukavi Tonsar i njegova porodica. Seljaci, ogorčeni zbog vlastelinskih privilegija i željni zemlje, pribegavaju krađi, sabotaži i intrigama.

Balzak detaljno prikazuje seoski život, siromaštvo i moralnu degradaciju, kao i pohlepu buržoazije, otelotvorenu u likovima kao što je Gober, manipulator koji manipuliše za svoju korist. Kroz složene odnose likova, roman otkriva klasne sukobe, korupciju i beskrupuloznu borbu za moć i zemlju. Balzakov naturalistički stil, sa svojim bogatim opisima prirode i društvenih odnosa, stvara živopisnu sliku ruralne Francuske. Iako nedovršen, roman ostaje snažna kritika društvenih nejednakosti i demonstracija Balzakove sposobnosti da analizira ljudsku prirodu.
