Čiča Gorio je priča o starom ratnom profiteru Goriou i njegovim ćerkama, koje ga, nakon što ga opljačkaju do kože, ostavljaju da umre u samoći i bedi pansiona Vaker, priča koja se danas može čitati na više nivoa.

Radnja romana smeštena je u siromašnu pansionu gospođe Voker, gde živi starac Goriot, bivši bogati proizvođač testenine, sada osiromašen zbog bezgranične ljubavi prema svojim kćerima — Anastaziji i Delfini. Pored njega u pansionu živi i mladi student prava, Ežen de Rastinjak, ambiciozni provincijalac koji dolazi u Pariz sa željom da uspe u društvu.

Goriot je simbol očinske požrtvovanosti — dao je celo svoje bogatstvo da bi svoje kćeri uveo u visoko društvo, ali one ga sada, stideći se njegove bedne situacije, gotovo potpuno zanemaruju. Ežen, fasciniran luksuzom i moći, ulazi u svet visokog društva uz pomoć tajanstvenog Votrena, kriminalca i manipulatora, ali se istovremeno zbližava sa Goriotom i postaje svedok njegove tragične sudbine.

U trenutku kada Goriot teško oboli, Ežen pokušava da pozove njegove kćeri, ali one, preokupirane svojim društvenim i ljubavnim intrigama, ne dolaze. Goriot umire slomljenog srca, ostavljen i zaboravljen, dok Ežen shvata okrutnost sveta kojem teži da pripada. Na sahrani nema nikoga osim Ežena i dva plaćena nosača.
