Pljačkaško gnijezdo

Zane Grey

"The Robber's Nest" is one of Grey's most realistic and darkest novels, and was made into a film in 1955, starring George Montgomery. It is considered one of the best Westerns of all time.

In the wilderness of southeastern Utah, in an inaccessible canyon called “Robbers’ Roost”, hides the most notorious gang of cattle robbers in the history of the Wild West, led by the cold-blooded Hank Hays. A mysterious stranger, Jim Wall, arrives at the Roost – a former gunslinger who is tired of blood and seeks peace, but his past will not let him go.

The owner of a huge ranch, Helen Herrick, hires Hays’ gang to “return” the cattle stolen by her rivals. Jim, in love with Helen, becomes an ambiguous mediator: officially a member of the gang, but in reality he is trying to prevent the worst crimes. Tensions rise when Helen’s brother Heeseman appears at the Roost – a greedy and cruel man who actually wants to take over his sister’s ranch.

The novel is a classic Grey blend of gritty Western and melodramatic romance: gunfights in red canyons, horseback chases through the dust, betrayals and life-and-death confrontations. Jim Wall must choose between his loyalty to the gang and his love for Helen, culminating in an epic battle in the narrow Nest Pass that decides who will survive.
