Majstori preporoda: Iizmeđu svietla i sjene - prikazi i slike

Ljubo Babić

A book by Croatian painter, set designer and art historian Ljubo Babić (1890–1974). The work is part of his popular overviews of world art published during the war years (along with "Color and Harmony", "The Golden Age of Spanish Painting", etc.).

The book brings a series of essayistic presentations and artistic analyses of the greatest masters of the Italian Renaissance and early Baroque. Babić covers artists such as Giotta, Piera della Francesca, Mantegna, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Tintoretto and others. He particularly emphasizes the dramatic use of light and shadow as a key element that brings the characters, space and emotional depth of their works to life.

Babić's approach is lively, artistically sensitive and synthetic – it combines historical context, technical analysis and personal experience of the work of art. As a painter himself, he pays special attention to the composition, volume, colour and psychological power of Renaissance creations, often connecting them with universal themes of human destiny, beauty and spirituality. The book is written in an accessible but refined style, intended for a wider cultural audience.

The 1943 edition is part of Babić's collected works (later reprinted) and bears witness to his rich activity as an interpreter of European artistic heritage. Today it is appreciated as a classic example of Croatian art essayism from the mid-20th century.
