Lolita

Lolita

Vladimir Nabokov

Lolita, a novel by the American writer Vladimir Nabokov, was first published in 1955 in Paris in English. The author himself translated Lolita into his native Russian language.

The novel is famous and extremely appreciated by critics. Despite this, it was banned and declared pornographic like Joyce's Ulysses upon publication. The reason for the controversy was an extremely provocative topic: a middle-aged man obsessed with a twelve-year-old girl embarks on a sexual adventure with her, which eventually develops into a relationship.

The Modern Library included it in its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century, where it ranked 4th. Lolita saw two screen adaptations: first by Stanley Kubrick in 1962, and then by Adrian Lyne in 1997.
