Pet stoljeća Hrvatske književnosti #32 - Ivan Mažuranić, Matija Mažuranić

Ivan Mažuranić, Matija Mažuranić

Volume 32 of the edition Five Centuries of Croatian Literature (published by Matica hrvatska, 1965), edited by Marin Franičević and Ivo Frangeš, brings a selection from the works of two significant Croatian writers of the 19th century – the brothers Ivan

Ivan Mažuranić (1814–1890), a poet, lawyer and politician, is known as the author of the epic poem The Death of Smail-aga Čengić (1846), which is considered the pinnacle of Croatian Romanticism. The work, in five cantos, depicts the revenge of the Montenegrins on the Ottoman tyrant Smail-aga, emphasizing the motifs of freedom, justice and popular resistance. In the poem, Mažuranić synthesizes elements of European and Croatian literary heritage, creating a layered and aesthetically rich work that occupies a classic place in Croatian literature.

Matija Mažuranić (1817–1881), Ivan's brother, distinguished himself with his travelogue Pogled u Bosnu (1842), in which he describes his journey through Bosnia under Ottoman rule. The work provides valuable insight into the social, cultural and political conditions of the time, combining personal observations with critical reflections on the situation in the region.

This volume represents an important contribution to the understanding of 19th-century Croatian literature, highlighting how the Mažuranić brothers shaped national consciousness and literary expression through their works.
