Pjesme i eseji

Antun Branko Šimić

"Poems and Essays" by A. B. Šimić is a posthumous publication that brings together selected poems and essays by one of the key figures of Croatian expressionism. This selection of his poetry and essays was edited by Vesna Krmpotić.

Šimić (1898–1925), born in the impoverished Drinovci near Livno, died young of tuberculosis in Zagreb. His work, marked by rebellion against tradition and an intense experience of the world, began with impressionism (“Cibaliana”, 1914), and culminated in the avant-garde “Transformations” (1920), a collection of 48 short poems in free verse, organized symmetrically around the themes of transformation: God, love, death, and poetry. Poems such as “Poets” and “Admonition” celebrate wonder at the world, poetic creation as a transfiguration of reality, and empathy for the suffering of others (“Man, be careful not to go under the stars, little one!”).

Eseji i kritike („Anarhija u umjetnosti“, „O muzici forma“) zagovaraju čistu umjetnost, rušenje starog i duboko prodiranje u egzistenciju, kritizirajući domaće autore (Krleža, Nazor) i prateći europske tokove. Krmpotićeva pogovorna studija naglašava Šimićev doprinos modernizmu: slobodni stih, vizualnost, eufoniju i depatetizirani izraz, čineći ga pionirskim utjecajem na hrv. liriku. Knjiga otkriva pjesnika tijela, grada i siromaha, čiju „poeziju iznutra“ čini trajno naslijeđe, unatoč ranim optužbama za „nepoeziju“. Šimićev opus, objavljen uglavnom posmrtno, spaja hercegovački korijen s univerzalnim nemirom, inspirirajući generacije.
