Marija Malbaša - prilog kulturnoj povijesti Osijeka

Marija Malbaša - prilog kulturnoj povijesti Osijeka

Vera Erl

One of the rare biographical monographs dedicated to a Croatian librarian. The book presents in detail the life and work of Marija Malbaša, a prominent Osijek librarian and scholar, whose contribution to the cultural history of Osijek is significant.

Marija Malbaša (1909–1995) began her career as a foreign language teacher, and from 1951 she devoted herself to librarianship at the Museum of Slavonia, where she organized the library, transforming it into a significant collection of books and periodicals. As the first trustee of the Osijek Librarians' Association (until 1967), she organized professional activities and promoted the city's cultural heritage.

Her research into printing and publishing resulted in works such as History of Printing in Slavonia (1978) and Osijek Bibliography (1981, 1985), which became the basis for studying Osijek's cultural heritage. Malbaša translated summaries and papers for the Osijek Anthology, often into German, contributing to Osijek's international recognition. She was a member of Matica Hrvatska and the Society of Friends of Antiquities "Mursa", and her work on Bibliographia Essekiana emphasized the importance of Osijek as a cultural center. Vera Erl's book, based on archival sources, emphasizes Malbaša's contribution to the affirmation of Osijek as the "metropolis of Slavonia".
