Ein Roman von Théophile Gautier, erschienen 1863. Es handelt sich um eine Abenteuergeschichte aus dem Frankreich des 17. Jahrhunderts, die Romantik, Humor und Ritterlichkeit mit Elementen des Theaters und der Gesellschaftssatire verbindet.

Captain Fracasse ist eine spannende Geschichte über einen verarmten Adligen, der sich einer reisenden Schauspieltruppe anschließt und anschließend eine Reihe ungewöhnlicher und gefährlicher Abenteuer erlebt. Dramatische Liebesbeziehungen, zahlreiche Fechtduelle, Verfolgungsjagden, Entführungen und unvorhersehbare Wendungen sind nur einige der Gründe, dieses Buch mit Vergnügen zu lesen.

Auf der Grundlage des Romans „Captain Fracasse“ entstanden mehrfach sehr erfolgreiche Abenteuerfilme. Der Text wird von außergewöhnlichen Illustrationen von Gustave Doré begleitet.
