As the war progresses, their destinies intertwine on the European battlefields, culminating in a powerful and poignant finale. The work masterfully deals with the themes of loss of innocence, the destructive power of ideology, and the alienation of the individual, and is rightly considered one of the best war novels of the 20th century.
