Jedan dan Ivana Denisoviča

Jedan dan Ivana Denisoviča

Aleksandar Solženjicin

The plot follows a day in the life of the title character; a prisoner sentenced to 10 years in a gulag somewhere in the Asian part of the Soviet Union in 1951.

The plot is based on the author's own autobiographical experiences, who spent 8 years in the Gulag for insulting Stalin in a letter. The novel is notable for being the first Russian literary work to openly address this taboo subject. Censorship was avoided due to the fact that the dismantling of Stalin's personality cult was in effect.
