Nikolson, u nastojanju da sačuva čast i disciplinu svojih ljudi, radi sa Japancima na izgradnji savršenog mosta, nesvestan da pomaže neprijatelju. Paralelno, saveznički komandosi planiraju da sabotiraju most. Vrhunac romana donosi poražavajuću spoznaju besmisla sukoba, gde predanost dužnosti vodi ka moralnim kompromisima. Delo je oštra kritika militarizma i slepog pridržavanja pravila, oslikavajući ljudsku borbu između časti, opstanka i apsurda rata.
