The story begins with the discovery of the body of Giovanni Trincanato, a wealthy but hated businessman, shot dead in his villa. The investigation leads through a dark web of family secrets, greed, and betrayal. Trincanato, known for his immoral behavior, had many enemies, including his children, Arturo and Maria, and a series of mistresses.

The discovery of compromising photographs and strange evidence, such as poisoned food, further complicates the case. Through interviews with the suspects, Montalbano uncovers a "nest of snakes" - a web of hatred and corruption within the family and the wider community. The truth about the killer and his motives emerges through Montalbano's patient analysis, revealing deep-seated traumas and revenge.
