Oslobođeni Zuckerman

Oslobođeni Zuckerman

Philip Roth

A novel about the ambitious and controversial writer Nathan Zuckermann, the protagonist and narrator in the first person.

Nathan Zuckerman, now a successful writer in his thirties, is basking in the unexpected commercial triumph of his latest novel, Carnovsky - a vulgar, erotically charged satire on Jewish identity and sexuality, which has turned him into a millionaire and media star. However, fame brings more burdens than joys: Zuckerman struggles with the loss of privacy, accusations that he betrayed the Jewish community with his "immoral" portraits, and pressure from a public that sees him as nothing more than a caricature from his own novel. The novel takes place in New York in 1969, in the era of counterculture and political unrest. Zuckerman tries to keep his distance from the world, but he faces a series of absurd and disturbing encounters: fans who press him with Carnovsky quotes, journalists who hunt him for juicy headlines, and strange characters like Alvin Pepler, a former scammer from the quiz show scandal of the 1950s, who asks him for money and "salvation" through a novel. Zuckerman's relationship with his young wife Jami is strained – she suffers from his obsession with writing and public image, and their marriage crumbles under the weight of fame.
