The life of 19-year-old Annabelle, surrounded by many privileges, changes dramatically after the sinking of the Titanic.
Struggling with an irreparable loss, she finds strength by volunteering at a hospital. A thirst for knowledge and a passion for medicine define her life. Her first love and idyllic marriage collapse under the weight of her husband's secret. Betrayed and scarred, she leaves New York and goes to war-torn France to heal her heart by helping the wounded. In the midst of World War I, she discovers her calling. After the war, she begins a new life in Paris, as a doctor and mother.
