The People of Seldwyla is a collection of short stories by Swiss writer Gottfried Keller, which depicts human weaknesses, social relationships, and everyday problems of ordinary people through the lives of the inhabitants of the fictional town of Seldwyla. Seldwyla is a small town surrounded by vineyards and forests, and its inhabitants are often cunning, selfish, stubborn, or overly ambitious. Keller describes them realistically, but also with a lot of humor and irony. The book consists of several independent stories. They feature merchants, craftsmen, peasants, and young lovers whose lives are complicated by greed, pride, love, or social rules. The author shows how human flaws often lead to misfortune, but also how individuals retain their humanity and feelings despite their mistakes.
