Životni krug
A collection of poetic and reflective writings by Zvonko Penović. Through the motif of the cycle of life, the author explores transience, the inner search for meaning, a sense of belonging to one's homeland, and enduring human values.
In the book Životni krug (The Circle of Life, 1996), Zvonko Penović gathers his expressive and metaphysical writings that explore human existence, the cycles of mature life, and the individual's relationship with their own past, homeland, and inner peace. Created in the post-war period of the 1990s, this collection offers a profound reflection on renewal, endurance, and the cyclical nature of human destiny. Penović’s style is distinguished by a distinctive blend of surrealist and expressionist poetic imagery, underscored by a strong moral and humanistic stance. The motif of the circle in the title itself symbolizes wholeness and the necessity of returning to fundamental values—love, aesthetic beauty, dignity, and spiritual purity—despite the drabness and challenges of everyday life. Through lyrical entries and contemplative passages, the author addresses not only personal, intimate concerns but also portrays the broader social and cultural context. The work stands as an exceptional testament to Penović’s creative voice, in which the spirit of his native Osijek merges with a universal quest for beauty and meaning in artistic creation.
