Ognjište: roman iz ličkoga seljačkog života

Mile Budak

The novel in 4 books "Ognjište" is Budak's most significant novel, written in 1938 and in just 43 days. It belongs to the third thematic cycle of Budak's creativity, which problematizes the village of Lika and the peasants.

Novel in 4 books "Ognjište" In her Lika saga, Mile Budak thematizes the Lika village and people as a small, closed and isolated entity. It describes the cultural, anthropological, civilizational Christian-patriarchal community in the process of its disintegration and impoverishment, which also means the disintegration of its traditional values. It refers to several fundamental components. In the first place is the soil, the earth as the primary element of vitalistic juices, the second is the sense of justice as an ethical problem, the third is rootedness in the national culture, and the fourth - the family as an elementary unit of life. However, the novel "Heart" also has its own allegorical-symbolic plan: the archetype of motherhood, the archetype of the hearth/house/home, Christian sacrifice, female fertilization and the archetype of the martyr victim and finally the archetype of the archaic-anthean role and the greatness of the earth, guarded by an ancient patriarchal ethos, for the maintenance of which is permitted.
