Velika trojica oči u oči: Nesporazumi o drugom frontu

Slobodan Nešović

A thorough historiographical study analyzes secret archival documents from the USA, USSR, and Britain about the disagreements of the Big Three over the opening of the Second Front and their impact on the Yugoslav battlefield.

The book The Big Three Face to Face: Misunderstandings on the Second Front by publicist and historian Slobodan Nešović (with the collaboration of Borka Đurić) is an exceptionally thorough and documented historiographical study dedicated to the complex military and diplomatic relations of the leading leaders of the anti-fascist coalition — Winston Churchill, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin. The focus of the research is on one of the most dramatic issues of World War II: the repeated postponement of the opening of the Second Front in Western Europe and the deep disagreements, suspicions and political outsmarting that arose as a result between the Soviet Union on the one hand and Great Britain and the USA on the other.

The special value of this study lies in the fact that it is among the first to systematically use newly opened materials and previously kept secrets from the state and military archives of the USA, Great Britain and especially the USSR. Through the analysis of stenographic notes from the Allied conferences in Tehran, Yalta and Moscow, the author meticulously presents the conflicting geopolitical strategies: while Stalin sought an immediate invasion of the West to relieve the bloody Eastern Front, Churchill advocated operations in the Mediterranean and the Balkans. Nešović skillfully integrates the events on the Yugoslav partisan battlefield into the whole, showing how the diplomatic games of the Big Three directly influenced relations with the NOP and the fate of the region. Richly equipped with photographs, this edition is a valuable source for understanding wartime diplomacy and the roots of the Cold War.
