The plot of the novel follows the life of a young man, Foma Gordeyev, who inherits a large business empire from his powerful and wealthy father.
Foma struggles to find his place in a world marked by greed and corruption, and becomes disillusioned with the moral decay he sees in the people around him, including his own family.
