The story begins in June, when Pero, a smart and enterprising boy, wakes up early and overhears his parents talking about an abandoned cooperative mill, neglected due to the discord of the peasants. Inspired, Pero gathers a group – Meda, Šila, Milo Dijete, Danica, Marija and others – with the idea of restoring the mill into a summer resort. The children face challenges: overgrown weeds, a collapsed bridge and a damaged mill. Despite internal conflicts and sabotage by the envious Savage, who reveals their secret to the girls, the group perseveres. Danica and Marija contribute by decorating the garden and walls. The owner of the steam mill tries to prevent their efforts, but the children, with the support of their teacher, succeed. At the end of the school year, the group reveals the restored mill to the villagers, who, embarrassed by the children’s discord, restart the mill. The novel emphasizes the values of friendship, teamwork and perseverance.
