Jens Bjørneboe

"Moment of Freedom" is the first novel of the "History of Bestiality" trilogy by Jens Bjørneboe, published in 1966. In the trilogy, the author deals with the problem of evil and the question of why people are capable of being so cruel to each other.

The main character, a middle-aged Norwegian, works as an unimportant court clerk in an Alpine valley, deeply dissatisfied with the outcome of his life after having traveled half of Europe as a sailor and bohemian, he decides to write a kind of autobiography entitled "The History of Bestiality" in which, among other things, he expresses his observations about human nature, wickedness, perversions and depravity.

The title derives from Bjørneboe's position that truth is a prerequisite for freedom, and that we can only be free when we recognize the reality of death.
