Zagor LU #145: Presuda po kratkom postupku
After five children disappear, Derford’s residents plan to burn a woman accused of witchcraft, leaving Zagor just 36 hours to uncover the truth and stop a lynching.
Presuda po kratkom postupku brings Zagor to Derford, a Vermont community shaken by the disappearance of five children. Fearful residents blame Margit Veszi, a Hungarian immigrant they believe to be a witch. Rather than investigate, they prepare to burn a woman whose difference has become sufficient grounds for condemnation.
Zagor secures a brief postponement: he has only thirty-six hours to find the children and prevent a lynching. His investigation must overcome not only an unexplained disappearance but also a community convinced it already knows the culprit. Rumour, anger and suspicion threaten every attempt at rational judgement.
Moreno Burattini creates a crime western with a strong social dimension. The danger arises from ordinary people turning fear into violence and treating prejudice as evidence. The distinction between justice and revenge lies at the heart of the story, while the deadline gives the investigation urgency.
Roberto D’Arcangelo illustrates the confrontation between an individual and an enraged community. This issue concludes the shorter adventure begun in the preceding instalment, combining the search for missing children with a defence of fair judgement.
