Ljubo de Karina

Ljubo de Karina

Berislav Valušek

Ljubo de Karina (born 1948 in Rakalj, Istria) is a Croatian sculptor known for his monumental works in stone, especially Istrian limestone, but also bronze and wood.

His oeuvre includes public monumental work, sacred sculpture, portraits and abstract forms, and he is one of the most significant names on the contemporary Croatian sculpture scene, especially in Istria. His work is marked by a synthesis of tradition and modernism – he often uses classical materials, but in contemporary, abstract or symbolic forms.

Frequent themes:

  • Man and nature

  • Memory and homeland

  • Meditativeness and silence

  • The meaning of existence expressed through simple, purified forms

He was one of the prominent participants in the Mediterranean Sculpture Symposium in Dubrova near Labin (Dubrova Sculpture Park), where he left a lasting mark.
