23 žene XX stoljeća

Aris Angelis

23 women of the 20th century talk about themselves and their century.

Poet Vesna Parun, professor Marijana Fišer Herman, who graduated and received her doctorate in physics and chemistry in Vienna, Katarina Kulenović Matanović, the first female pilot in Croatia but on the wrong side, Vera Horvat, a sailor who sailed around the world, all the oceans and many seas but never talked about it, then our most beautiful and first film blonde and the wife of an Oscar winner Lila Andres, a famous lady before and after the war Ćuća Smokvina, who was photographed with King Alexander, Poglavnik Pavelić and Marshal Tito and who was accused of working for at least three spy services. Alojzija Caratan won a Miss contest as a girl, and spent the rest of her life as a nun. Lukrecija Pramberger, as an opera singer, loved and kissed men on stage, but she died as an “old maid”. Eliza Gerner lived her life in love both on stage and at home. She played in Graz, Vienna and Berlin, acting in three languages, German, Hungarian and Croatian. She only got married in Zagreb. Jelena Nikonjenko arrived in Zagreb from Stavropol via Crimea and Istanbul, at a time when the Whites were fleeing from the Reds. There she achieved a notable role as a chemist. Kitty Berk, born Lowenstein, fled from Zagreb to America to save her life. Sonia Wild, a British officer, left London for love and spent most of her life in Zagreb. Rajka Vali was our first singing star, she became famous in the fifties, but she preferred her architecture degree. She designed hospitals in Germany and sang for American soldiers. Stela Skopal graduated in sculpture and was our most famous and respected ceramicist, “she had success both in the country and in the world”. Reminiscing about the past, Edita Bartolović and Nada Raverta also talked about the decline of the aristocracy in Croatia and the path from wealth to poverty. Vanda Novosel, from the well-known and respected Zagreb Novosel family, spent most of the wartime with the Supreme Staff alongside Tito, Đilas and Ranković. She later married the head of UDBA and Ozna. Bosa Furlan, Naranđa Škerl and Ivanka Strize spent their most beautiful girlhood in the hell of the Neretva and Sutjeska rivers and survived alongside rivers of blood.
