Majčin grijeh

Branko Klarić

A collection of short stories by Branko Klarić, with the title novella Majčin grijeh (Mother's Sin) (1940) and other stories of a moral-spiritual and social character, is the Catholic-intoned prose of the then young teacher, poet and prose writer.

Branko Klarić (1912–1945) was a teacher, a poet of spiritual and patriotic lyrics, and a member of Catholic literary circles. He died on the Stations of the Cross after Bleiburg. Although he is best known for his poetry, this collection showed his inclination towards moralistic and spiritual prose.

The collection contains stories written in a simple, emotional style with clear Catholic moral messages. The dominant themes are sin and repentance, maternal love and sacrifice, family conflicts, poverty, faith, and spiritual redemption. The title story, Mother's Sin, and other similar short stories deal with the consequences of moral decline on the family and the destiny of the individual, with an emphasis on the possibility of repentance and salvation.

The booklet is intended for a wider Catholic audience, especially families and young people, and has a didactic and stimulating character. The cover was illustrated by Vladimir Mirosavljević, a Croatian painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and archaeologist. The style is realistic-moralistic, typical of Catholic literature of the interwar period – without major artistic experimentation, but honest and instructive.

Today this is a rare antiquarian publication, interesting for the study of spiritual and Catholic literature in Croatia before World War II. The collection reflects the conservative values of the Croatian Catholic intelligentsia of that time – an emphasis on family, moral purity and religious life. Like most of Klarić's works, after 1945 it was marginalized in socialist Yugoslavia.
