Život puža roman
Vjekoslav Majer’s novel *The Life of a Snail* is a touching Zagreb story about an ordinary man, social hardships, and everyday struggles—imbued with warm humor, gentle irony, and a sense of wistfulness.
The well-known novel Život puža (The Life of a Snail) by Croatian author Vjekoslav Majer stands as one of the most prominent prose works dedicated to the working-class and modest urban milieu of Zagreb during the interwar period. With exceptional warmth and empathy, the author follows the life paths of ordinary, humble people from the city’s outskirts—individuals struggling for survival and a shred of dignity amidst precarious social and economic circumstances. The central motif of the snail symbolizes the existential position of the protagonists: a slow, quiet progression, a constant need to retreat into one’s own protected space, and the burden of daily life carried upon one’s own back. With effortless narrative skill, Majer depicts street scenes, family dynamics, poverty, and small joys, weaving together a realistic social focus with the distinct atmosphere of Zagreb. His narrative style is characterized by subtle irony, gentle humor, melodic language, and a profound sensitivity toward the downtrodden. Život puža remains a valuable literary testament to the social history of Zagreb and an essential work of 20th-century Croatian urban prose.
