The Devil's Pond: The young widower Germain sets out in search of a new wife with the help of his father-in-law. Along the way, he meets a poor shepherdess, Maria, with whom he goes through many hardships, including a night spent by the mysterious Devil's Pond. During the journey, Germain and Maria grow closer, discovering genuine feelings and a simple, natural love. Sand idealizes peasant life and emphasizes the importance of honesty, cordiality, and natural harmony.
Little Fadette: One of the twins, Landry, although initially distrustful of her, eventually discovers her kindness and falls in love. Fadette helps both Landry and Sylvin at crucial moments, and her wisdom and selflessness slowly change the attitudes of the community.
