Choderlos de Laclos

Dangerous Liaisons is an epistolary novel published in 1782, which shows through a series of letters the hypocrisy and manipulation of French aristocratic society on the eve of the French Revolution.

The main characters, Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont, plot to achieve their personal goals – revenge, seduction and power.

The Marquise de Merteuil wants to avenge her former lover's deception by persuading Valmont to seduce the young and innocent Cécile de Volanges, who has just returned from the convent and is preparing for marriage. At the same time, Valmont wants to win the virtuous and pious Madame de Tourvel, a challenge that provides him with additional motivation.

Through a series of intrigues, Valmont manages to seduce Madame de Tourvel, but contrary to his expectations, he falls in love with her. At the same time, Cécile, manipulated and emotionally destroyed, ends up in a tragic situation. When the Marquise de Merteuil and Valmont break their alliance, their open fight begins, ending with Valmont's death in a duel and the social downfall of the Marquise.

The novel brutally exposes the corruption of the elite, the hypocrisy surrounding issues of morality and love, and uses the innovative form of letters to portray the psychological depth of the characters. It is considered one of the pinnacles of 18th-century French literature.
