The story follows Lucy Bostil, the daughter of a stable owner, who yearns for adventure beyond the confines of her home. Her desire for freedom leads her to a fearless horse known as Wildfire, whose untamed nature mirrors her own longing for independence. Lucy embarks on a quest to find Wildfire, which leads her to meet Lin Sloan, an experienced cowboy who has long hunted the legendary horse.

As the story unfolds, Lucy and Lin face numerous challenges, including natural hazards and threats from malevolent characters. Their shared struggle to tame Wildfire becomes a metaphor for their personal aspirations and struggle for freedom.
