Anđelika i demonka

Anđelika i demonka

Anne Golon, Serge Golon

Angelica flees to the New World, where she meets the charismatic Ambroisine de Maudribourg. Behind the pious character hides an obsessive manipulator who hates and wants to possess Angelica. A dark continuation of the series full of tension and female riv

After the turbulent events in the New World (Gouldsboro, Maine), Angelique leaves the fortified town to join her husband Joffrey de Peyrac and escape the suffocating atmosphere. On the coast of Maine, she rescues shipwreck survivors – a group of “Fille du Roi” (girls sent from France to marry colonists) and their charismatic leader, Duchess Ambroisine de Maudribourg.

Ambroisine is an exceptionally beautiful, intelligent and seemingly pious woman who quickly wins the sympathy of everyone – colonists, Indians and even Angelique’s closest relatives. Her charm hides a dark secret: she is fanatical, possessive and pathologically obsessed with Angelique. A destructive, almost erotic tension develops between the two women – Ambroisine sees Angelique as a rival, idol and object of hatred, calling her “the demon” (hence the title).

A series of mysterious crimes and accidents shakes the community: suicides, murders, sabotage, accusations of witchcraft. Ambroisine manipulates people, spreads fear, accuses Angelica of demonic forces and tries to destroy her physically and morally. Angelica, at first confused, gradually realizes the danger - Ambroisine is a real "demon" who feeds on hatred and the desire to possess.

The key moment comes when Angelica reads the farewell letter of the Jesuit Father de Vernon (killed in the plot): he reveals Ambrosina's past - a false mystic, murderer and manipulator. The conflict culminates in a dramatic showdown: Anđelika must save herself, her family and the community from Ambrosina's revenge and madness.

The novel is darker and more psychologically tense than the previous ones - the focus is on female rivalry, obsession, seduction and the struggle of good and evil within the female figure. Angelica shows maturity and strength, but pays a high price. The end brings victory, but with traces of trauma and new challenges for Peyrac and Andjelica in the New World.
