Bribirski knezovi od plemena Šubić do god. 1347.

Vjekoslav Klaić

A monograph on the rise and fall of the powerful Croatian noble family of Šubić Bribirski with a genealogical table, written by Vjekoslav Klaić (1849–1928), one of the most important Croatian historians of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

1,593 The work presents a detailed and documented history of the Šubić family of Bribir (Princes of Bribir), one of the most powerful Croatian great families in the Middle Ages. Klaić traces their genealogy, political rise, banal power and role in Croatian history from the 13th century to 1347 (the death of Prince Mladen II. Šubić of Bribir).

The role of Paul I. Šubić of Bribir (ban 1273–1312), who was an almost independent ruler of Croatia and Bosnia, and his successors, is particularly emphasized. Klaić describes their relations with the Croatian-Hungarian kings, conflicts with rival noble families (e.g. Nelipić), the expansion of their power to Bosnia, the islands and coastal cities and the final decline of their power after the death of Mladen II, is described.

The book is written on the basis of a thorough study of archival sources, chronicles and diplomatic materials. As a typical representative of the genetic approach in Croatian historiography, Klaić focused on genealogy, political events and the reconstruction of family history. The style is clear, scientific and concise, but still readable even for a wider educated audience.

This work is considered a classic and fundamental work on the Šubićs of Bribir. It was published in the same year as Klaić's study Croatian Tribes from the 12th to the 16th Century, which shows his intense interest in the Croatian medieval nobility.

The monograph is an important contribution to national historiography because it highlights the period when Croatian nobles had an exceptionally strong role in state affairs, thereby strengthening Klaić's awareness of the continuity of Croatian statehood and political autonomy in the Middle Ages.
