Meksički mučenici

Petar Grgec

An account of Catholic persecution in 1920s Mexico links the historical background of the conflict with religious steadfastness, suffering and martyrdom.

In Meksički mučenici (Mexican Martyrs), Petar Grgec introduces Croatian readers to the conflict between Mexico’s government and the Catholic Church, particularly the persecution of the 1920s. Published while the conflict was still unfolding, the book also records a contemporary response to events that deeply concerned Catholic audiences.

Grgec connects political and social circumstances with the preservation of faith under repression. His treatment of Catholic suffering reflects an explicitly Christian outlook, emphasising the moral significance of persecution and martyrdom. The writing is committed and directed towards a broad readership.

The volume is notable as an early Croatian account of Mexico’s religious crisis. It also illuminates the Croatian Catholic movement’s interest in international affairs and the ways religious freedom, state authority and resistance were discussed between the world wars.

Of interest to readers of church history, Mexican history and interwar nonfiction, the book has a dual significance: it addresses a historical conflict while revealing the beliefs and concerns through which its author interpreted it.
