Hrvati su tijekom povijesti razvili vrlo bogatu književnost: usmenu i pisanu, tj. onu koju su zapisivali oni koji su je stvarali. Gotovo je deset stoljeća stara hrvatska pisana književnost, a usmena je, neprijeporno, daleko starija. Takve su se pjesme prenosile govorom i pjevanjem u raznim zgodama: na okupljanjima uz pojedine blagdane i proslave zaštitnika župa, na sijelima, prelima, vezenju, komušanju kukuruza, listanju duhana, čehanju perja, striženju ovaca, pripremi voća za sušenje, svatovima, pogrebima, uspavljivanju djece i t.d.
